Rehearsing Freedoms is a pan-London festival of community health, healing, movement building, arts and culture presented by Healing Justice London.
Rehearsing Freedoms brings more than 100 radical social practitioners, artists, healthcare providers, activists, dreamers, weavers, community healers and organisers together attending to the work of helping us all get free. This rehearsal of freedoms takes shape through workshops, performances, community gatherings, conversations, immersive spaces, and skill shares where we practise freedom and forge new ways of being.
The festival’s 80+ events have been curated to take us through an exploration and deepening of our fundamental human needs for liberation and living whole lives. Each week in rotation across our primary venues, we journey through safety, dignity, belonging, and access to life itself.
Defiant and Life-Affirming: Resisting State Violence
As part of ICF’s residency at Block 336 – ICF @ Block 336 – we are acting as one of the primary venues for Rehearsing Freedoms. We are presenting the exhibition Defiant and Life-Affirming: Resisting State Violence.
The exhibition invites us into conversation and connection to overturn state violence, and repair and reimagine. This work centres disabled people’s creativity, resistance and expertise in demanding accountability for the ways the welfare system is killing people, while moving away from single issue organising into the connection of different struggles.
The exhibition features contributions from:
Zita Holbourne
Sabba Khan
Vince Laws
Nnull
Paula Peters
Project Billinghurst
Sahej Rahal
Dolly Sen
During the exhibition, weekly events will take place on nights and weekends as part of the festival. Find out more about the full public programme here.
HJL have programmed the space in ways that support solidarity – to recognise how state violence impacts all of our lives, and to collectively reimagine justice and ecosystems of care.
We come together to dream of and build life-affirming systems.
We welcome you into this space and invite you to rehearse with us for how we collectively nurture more life and aliveness for all of our bodyminds and spirit.
At the heart of our exhibition is the Deaths by Welfare timeline, deeply informed by disabled people’s expertise, knowledge, activism, and movements, and which evidences how the welfare system creates life-threatening policies that lead to people’s deaths.
The exhibition is curated by Healing Justice Ldn, in partnership with International Curators Forum (ICF), as part of a collaboration for Rehearsing Freedoms.
We have a living altar and vigil space honouring the resistance and lives of those we’ve lost to state and welfare violence. We call in the power of our ancestors and loved ones in this rehearsal as they move with us. If you would like to add a picture, item or artefact to honour them in the space, please do bring it along.
Content note: The exhibition and some of our events are about brutal systems. Please prioritise care.
