Project:
Skinder Hundal, Chief Executive at New Art Exchange, welcomed the Beyond the Frame and Diaspora Platform participants to Nottingham in February 2017 with a session addressing the history and ambitions of NAE and Skinder’s experiences of working on a collateral event for the 56th Venice Biennale – Doug Fishbone’s Leisure Land Golf. The group also heard from one of the exhibiting artists in that show – Hetain Patel – who spoke about the development of his practice. This visit coincided with the exhibition Untitled: Art on the Conditions of Our Time curated by one of the project’s mentors Paul Goodwin and Hansi Momodu-Gordon. Diaspora Pavilion participants Larry Achiampong and Kimathi Donkor were both exhibiting in Untitled and discussed their works Finding Fanon 2 (2015) and When Shall We 3 (Scenes from the life of Njinga Mbandi) (2010) respectively. The masterclass ended with a viewing of The Place Is Here at Nottingham Contemporary, which showcased art from the 1980’s that asked pivotal questions about identity, representation and culture, including the work of mentors Joy Gregory, Isaac Julien and Dave Lewis.
