ICF selected 10 UK-based curators from an open call, which asked them to detail how their professional activity would benefit from the attendance at the 2014 Sharjah Art Foundation’s March Meeting. Over a 5-7 day period, the group undertook multiple professional development opportunities. Events showcased and explored the reciprocity of practices between UK curators and their colleagues in the Middle East when considered in a global context, and aimed to initiate new partnerships that will reach future English audiences. In addition to networking and professional development forum, the ICF participants attended the March Meeting’s exhibitions, screenings and discussions.
The March Meeting covered topics such as: sustained engagements and commitments by both institutions and artists; the development of a language of cultural production; shaping emerging art scenes; and a range of artistic engagements that draw upon history to envision future possibilities.
The March Meetings’ four days of discourse brought together architects, artists, art historians, curators, gallerists, writers, art advisors, designers, teachers, and students. Attendees came from over 38 countries, including: Armenia, Austria, Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Cuba, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Hong Kong, India, Italy, Iran, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lithuania, Mexico, Pakistan, Palestine, Poland, Portugal, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, South Africa, South Korea, The Netherlands, UAE, UK, USA, Yemen and Zimbabwe.
