Crafting Intimacy & Play - Scent Mapping Workshop with Maya Njie
ICF x KAKAZI studio are collaborating on a workshop series titled Crafting Intimacy & Play, inviting Black women and non-binary people to engage with personal archives and stories through making art and intergenerational discussions.
For our third workshop, London based perfumer Maya Njie will present an immersive exploration of fragrance making inspired by the rich cultural history of Brixton.
Taking up Maya’s unique approach to scent creation and using historical images of Brixton held at Black Cultural Archives as a spring board of inspiration, attendees will learn about the basic structures of and explore a variety of natural and synthetic ingredients that are commonly used in perfumery to create their own unique and bespoke blends. Each attendee will receive a kit containing a 20ml glass dropper bottle to tailor to their own preferences, along with a 7.5ml vial to decant into. They will also be working from their own formula booklet. This facilitates a creative way to put your own stamp on how you imagine and feel the landscape represents you.
OPEN CALL
We are extending an open call to Black women and non-binary participants – particularly those with a relationship to Brixton – to join us for this Scent-Mapping workshop on Wednesday 20 September 2023, 6-8pm at Block 336 in Brixton. There are only 6 spaces available, so please only sign up if you are able to join the session.
About the project
Crafting Intimacy & Play is an opportunity for a small group of people to come together to engage with artists and different art forms across ceramics, fashion design, drawing, sound and scent. These creative activities help us imagine ways of connecting to the past, present and future, while exploring various paths to self-expression. The workshop series intends to connect Black women and non-binary peoples’ experiences to curiosity, play and joy.
We have one final upcoming workshop in the series:
Wednesday 25 October – Clay Workshop with Phoebe Collings-James
Please do sign up for our newsletter here to find out more. Some workshops will take place at Block 336, where ICF is doing a residency throughout 2023, and others will take place throughout Brixton.
