Yewande YoYo Odunubi
Diasporic Curatorial Animateur
Yewande YoYo Odunubi is a neurodivergent artist, cultural producer and researcher working in the spaces between curation, performance, dance, research and facilitation. Her practice is centred around the mantra “I’m not here for a [single] version of me, I’m here for every part of me” and, most recently, the core enquiry: what does the body need to dream?
Using a reflexive approach, Yewande places the (and her) body at the centre of her practice, playing and experimenting with different conditions that might nurture and give possibility to a thriving, dreaming self. Seeing the body as a dynamic communicator for thinking about process(es), identity, space and histories, she is interested in how theory and practice can be processed and actioned in the body through movement. Just as important to her work is the relationship between Black performance and the Black producer/curator’s role as part of the performance. Often thinking through all of these ideas simultaneously, Yewande draws on embodied and intersectional frameworks and interventions that rupture dominant discourse(s) and structures of knowledge, exchange and equity within the arts.
Yewande’s currently a member of Black Curators Collective, Deptford X Peer Network and alongside poet, curator and friend Rohan Ayinde, she is one half of the wayward, motile collaborative duo i.as.in.we. She has produced public programmes in art spaces and cultural institutions including; 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning, BLANK100, CCA Glasgow, Free Word, Now Gallery, Southbank Centre, Tate, V&A and Wellcome Collection. She also has been a frequent creative collaborator of London based art and music curators BBZ and Touching Bass. She has completed residencies with g39 and Yinka Shonibare Foundation/Guest Projects and is a recipient of the Jerwood Live Work Fund 2021.
